Meet AJC Joinery Workshops Director Andy Stewart

July 10, 2024

Our joinery workshop is home to a team of multi-skilled craftspeople who have delivered a vast array of bespoke projects over the years. Experienced in private, domestic and commercial builds, our experts make every piece bespoke to order.

Our experts work with a range of hard and soft woods to produce windows, doors, staircases, cabinetry and beyond, and promise to deliver an exceptional level of quality time-after-time due to an unwavering commitment to their craft.

Leading our Joinery Workshop is our Director, Andy Stewart, who has been with the company for more than 22 years. In this blog post, Andy discusses what sets our joinery workshop apart, his stand-out projects over the years, and more…

Could you tell us what a typical day looks like for you?

“Joinery Workshop Director is a very rewarding role, as I enjoy a mixture of client-facing responsibilities as well as some hands-on duties where I’ll be busy in our Aboyne workshop helping with the manufacturing of bespoke items. I thoroughly enjoy the client-side of my role, as I get to meet and collaborate with a fantastic range of customers and architects where we’ll discuss their projects, and how AJC can help them.

“Over the years, we have developed a portfolio of exciting and complex projects for customers across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, many of which are repeat clientele. This is largely due to the reliable quality of our craftsmanship, but I believe the effort we put into customer service is also a big factor in our success. I try to make things as seamless and efficient as possible for our customers from the initial consultation and estimating phase, through to the final delivery of products.

“Outside of the client-facing responsibilities, I ensure our sister companies, AJC Homes and AJC Construction, are equipped with the bespoke items needed for projects such as windows, doors, staircases and cabinetry. Additionally, I supervise the workshop and its team on a daily basis, while getting my hands dirty and helping with the manufacturing of bespoke items.”

Can you give an overview of your team and its capabilities?

“Our Workshop team continues to grow as it now consists of four experienced Bench Hand Joiners and two Apprentices, while we are currently recruiting for an additional Bench Hand Joiner and a Spray Painter.

“The vast knowledge and skilled craftsmanship of our team ensures that we are covered in every aspect of the joinery manufacturing trade. We’re equipped to manufacture all types of windows, stairs, doors, and cabinetry, many of which are bespoke and made-to-measure items tailored to the specifications of clients and designers. For example, we can match existing joinery in listed buildings and conservation areas.

“With all projects, we use the highest-quality materials including a variety of timbers and sheet materials such as Redwood, Oak, Meranti hardwood, Sapele, as well as MDF and plywood.

“We like to think we can bring value to any project requiring joinery; we’ve helped with complete renovation and restorations, and have handled notable large-scale projects at Aboyne Castle, Clash Farmhouse, Findrack House, and Woodthorpe.”

What distinguishes the joinery workshop from other local joinery services?

“I think our capabilities and skills extend beyond some of our competitors in the region, as we’re able to manufacture bespoke items that can have very complex architectural specifications and drawings. Additionally, our team is incredibly experienced meaning we can offer knowledge and advice to customers on these unique pieces - this level of expertise is harder to come by than you may think.

“I believe our workshop thrives when tackling challenging projects, and that some of our competitors will avoid complicated jobs that they deem are too risky. At AJC, there’s no job for us that is too big or too small - we encourage you to reach out to our team even if you think your project may pose quite a challenge!”

Why should customers choose to work with AJC?

“I think when customers are looking for a joinery partner, they should look for a workshop that has lengthy experience, a proven track record, as well as strong project management and communication skills - I believe our workshop has all of this in abundance.

“We have developed an excellent reputation for delivering first-class joinery projects, and have many repeat customers due to this level of quality and the effort we put into customer relationships.”
